Bone in the jaw can be lost to slowly progressing disease or sudden traumatic injuries. The ideal goal of treatment is to regenerate the bone so that function and appearance are restored. This may allow more options for dental treatment by providing a solid foundation for restorative work.

This surgical procedure regenerates the previously lost gum and bone tissue. Some techniques use membranes, which are inserted over the bone defects. Some of these membranes are bio-absorbable and some require removal. Other regenerative procedures involve the use of bioactive gels.
