Peri-implantitis: protecting the health of your dental implants.
Dental implants are designed to be a long-term solution for replacing missing teeth. Like natural teeth, however, they require regular care to keep the surrounding gums and bone healthy.
Peri-implantitis is an inflammatory condition that affects the gum tissue and supporting bone around a dental implant. It is similar to periodontal (gum) disease around natural teeth. If left untreated, it can lead to progressive bone loss and, in advanced cases, loosening or loss of the implant.
What are the early warning signs?
Peri-implant disease often begins as peri-implant mucositis — inflammation of the gum tissue surrounding an implant. You may notice redness, tenderness, swelling, or bleeding when brushing or flossing. At this early stage, the condition can often be reversed before significant bone loss occurs.
As the disease progresses, bacteria and inflammation can begin to destroy the bone supporting the implant. This is known as peri-implantitis.
How is peri-implantitis treated?
Treatment depends on how advanced the disease has become. Our goal is to control the infection, stop further bone loss, and preserve the implant whenever possible.
Treatment may include professional cleaning and removal of bacterial deposits around the implant, antimicrobial therapy, and improved home care. When bone loss is more advanced, periodontal surgery or laser-assisted treatment may be recommended to thoroughly clean and disinfect the implant surface.
In selected cases, bone grafting and regenerative procedures may also be used to rebuild some of the bone that has been lost around the implant.
Every implant is different, so treatment is customized based on the amount and pattern of bone loss, the condition of the implant, and the health of the surrounding tissues.

How long do dental implants last?
Well-maintained implants can last for decades. What determines longevity is not the implant itself but the health of the gum and bone around it — which is why regular maintenance matters just as much after treatment as before.
Is implant surgery painful?
Placement is carried out under local anaesthetic, with sedation available for anyone who would prefer it. Most patients tell us afterwards that it was more comfortable than they had expected, with mild soreness for a few days.
Can an implant be placed straight after an extraction?
Often, yes — placing the implant at the time of extraction can shorten the overall treatment. Whether it is possible depends on how much healthy bone remains and whether infection is present, which we assess with imaging beforehand.
